Emerging from the vibrant music scene of Australia in the early 1990s, Baby Animals emerged as a formidable force in rock music. Led by the charismatic and powerful vocals of Suze DeMarchi, the band quickly captivated audiences with their raw energy, catchy melodies, and thought-provoking lyrics.
Formation and Early Success:
Baby Animals was formed in Melbourne in 1989, with DeMarchi as the driving force behind the project. Joining her were guitarist Dave Leslie, bassist Eddie Parise, and drummer Frank Celenza. The band's self-titled debut album, released in 1991, catapulted them to stardom, selling over 500,000 copies in Australia alone. The album spawned several hit singles, including "Early Warning," "Painless," and the iconic "Email."
Challenges and Controversies:
Despite their commercial success, Baby Animals faced their share of challenges. Internal tensions within the band led to the departure of Parise and Celenza in 1993. DeMarchi and Leslie later married, but their relationship ended in a public divorce in 1999. These personal and professional setbacks tested the band's resilience.
Lineup Changes and Reemergence:
Following the departure of Parise and Celenza, Baby Animals recruited new members, including bassist Darryl Jones and drummer Mick O'Shea. The band released two more albums, "Shaved and Dangerous" (1993) and "Hunters and Collectors" (1996), but they failed to match the commercial success of their debut.
In 2003, Baby Animals announced their breakup. However, the band reunited in 2007 with a new lineup that included guitarist Carlo Santone and bassist Chris Bailey. They released their fourth studio album, "Love and Fury," in 2009, and have continued to tour and record since then.
